CREW DIRECTIONS
TO ALL CREW ACCESSIBLE AID STATIONS
Directions to Georgia Crew Accessible Aid Stations
Pay special attention to the rules relating to the aid stations. The following aid stations are all crew accessible. Due to the size and location of some aid stations, crew cars are not allowed to arrive at the aid station more than 30 minutes before their runner arrives. Use the “Trackleader App” to keep up with your runner’s progress. It will be necessary for your crew to find cell reception to use the app.
I don’t like having to make threats, but in this case we have no alternative. Violations of any of these rules will result in the disqualification of your runner.
If crew cars cause a disruption in traffic, or are parked on highways near the aid station, the National Forest Service could cancel our permits to have the Southern States 200. It is also very important that the trailheads always have room for hikers’ cars. They have priority over runner crews. You may be asked to move your car.

There are no parking areas. The aid station is on the side of the road. If you choose to go to this aid station, you MUST PARK OFF THE ROADWAY. This will be difficult. You will likely have to walk a ways. Do not park past the aid station more than 200 feet. It is all private land. The area before the aid station is national forest land. Do not take a large camper or trailer down this road. It will be difficult to turn around. You must approach the aid station from the east on CR 70. (Google maps shows you can approach the aid station from the Piedmont (west) side. You cannot. The bridge is closed.)
This one is tough to get to. The attached map is the best route. A shorter route is CR 183 to CR 227 to CR 92 to CR 49. However, several miles are on gravel roads. It’s probably quicker to take the longer route. From High Point, go right out of the trailhead on US Hwy 278 for 4.4 miles. Turn right on CR 170 for one mile. The road turns right, then back left across the Chief Ladiga Trail and connects into CR 49. Turn right on 49 for 2.4 miles and angle to the right onto CR70. You will immediately cross the Chief Ladiga trail again. Stay on CR 70 for 2.7 miles and turn left onto CR 94 for 0.7mile. Also, in the same area, runners will be on FS 540 for about 2 miles. FS RD 540 IS OFF LIMITS TO CREW CARS.
Is that enough rules? Runners are on CR 500 for 5 miles and 540 for 2 miles. Both roads are packed dirt and gravel. There is very little traffic on the roads, and we don’t want to add to the dust runners will encounter. (This is a disqualification offense.) There is no parking area at Hilltop Blue. Crew cars must park along the side of the road approaching the aid station. Park on the left side of the road as far off the roadway as possible.
The best way to get to Coleman Lake is on Hwy 78 which runs between Tallapoosa, GA to Heflin, AL. From Low Point, head back to CR 70 and go right 2.2 miles back to CR 49. Turn right and follow 49 for 10.4 miles to CR 65. Turn right on CR 65 for 5.9 miles to where it connects with US Hwy 78. Turn right on 78 for one mile and take CR 61 to the right. Follow CR 61 north for 7.1 mile to CR 532. Turn right for 0.3 miles to CR 500 and turn right. Follow signs to the Coleman Lake Campground. These roads are all paved to the campground.
To reach Hilltop Blue aid station, continue past the campground on CR 500 for 0.4 miles to where 500 turns left. Continue on 500 for 2.2 miles on the gravel road to Hilltop Blue on your left. DO NOT drive past the aid station. Getting to Hilltop Blue from Heflin, Oxford, or Bald Rock at Cheaha State Park, use this route from US 78. Also use US 78 to reach CR 61 from any location in Georgia. Many of you will choose not to go to Low Point. I included a map from High Point, Alabama to Hilltop Blue.
Coleman Lake Aid and Sleep Station - Mile 157.66
This one is easy. The aid station is in a pavilion just past the entrance to the campground. Turn off CR 500 at the signs to the Campground. If you end up at the lake, turn around and go back 100 yds. The directions below are from Heflin or Oxford.
From Bald Rock Lodge in Cheaha State Park to Coleman Lake, take the Mountain Skyway Hwy CR 281 north, 19.5 miles to connect with US Hwy 78, east, 10.2 miles through Heflin, AL to CR 61. Turn left on 61 to Coleman Lake.
Highrock Aid Station - Mile 172.26
DO NOT ARRIVE AT THE AID STATION MORE THAN 30 MINUTES AHEAD OF YOUR RUNNER. Approach Highrock from CR 500, either from Coleman Lake Campground or from Hwy 78 near Heflin. From Coleman Lake, drive 12 miles south on CR 500. This is a VERY slow drive on packed gravel roads all the way. Follow CR 500 to FS 531 and turn right for 0.9 miles. The aid station is on your right. The aid station is in a wide spot in the road. There is no parking area. Park before or after the aid station, on the right side of the road as far off the roadway as possible.
If you are heading to Highrock from Bald Rock Lodge in Cheaha State Park, take CR 281 (the Skyway Mountain Highway) north to CR 500. Follow 500 on packed gravel for 2.2 miles. At FS 531 go left for 0.9 miles to the Highrock Aid Station. This is another packed gravel road. Park on the right side of the road as you approach the aid station. You may also park past the aid station but drive slowly as you get close. FS 531 is a loop, but I recommend turning around. It’s a long, slow drive around the loop.
Fay’s Blowdown Aid and Sleep Station - Mile 183.24
DO NOT ARRIVE AT THE AID STATION MORE THAN 30 MINUTES AHEAD OF YOUR RUNNER. Fay’s is on CR281, the Skyway Mountain Highway, 17.4 miles from the Bald Rock Lodge. The trailhead is very small. It may be necessary to park along CR 281. If you cannot park in the trailhead, your car must be totally of the pavement. DO NOT ARRIVE EARLY! It is only 12 miles to Oxford with many restaurant and options.
Leave Highrock Aid Station and turn right on CR 500 and drive south 2.4 miles to where it connects into CR 281 (the Skyway Mountain Highway) and go left. Continue on 281 for 3.4 miles. The aid station will be on the left just before the bridge over Interstate-20.
From Bald Rock Lodge in Cheaha State Park, take CR 281 (the Skyway Mountain Highway) northeast for 16.2 miles. The aid station is on the right just past the Interstate-20 bridge.
